Gamescom 2026 Demo
Gamescom 2026 in Cologne was the world’s first public hands-on for Stranger Than Heaven: SEGA Hall 7, a booth dressed like an old Japanese jazz bar, producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto on signing duty, and a combat-forward demo the studio later posted as an official twelve-minute playthrough. The tape is the longest uncut look at 1915 Kokura streets, a 1929 Kure boss-length brawl, and a rainy 1943 Osaka encounter. This page is the booth report and the viewing notes. Bruises from Summer Game Fest still live on hands-on. City density after the fences come down lives on exploration.
What the official tape actually shows
Siliconera timed the Japanese/English playthrough that SEGA posted on August 28, 2026. The first minute and a half stay in 1915 Kokura: Makoto walking a street on a job from his boss, background chatter, models, shopfronts. Then the bruises start. 1929 Kure arrives around 3:25, with what looks like an extended boss from roughly 5:00 to 7:55. 1943 Osaka is a rainy night and a more generic encounter. Difficulty ramps — Gameliner described an easy group, a giant, then a dangerous swordsman. Weapons enter the grammar beside fists: knives, hammers, katanas, keepable tools with their own attacks, not the old “pick up and throw away” RGG joke.
The embed in the middle of this page is RGG Studio’s own Gamescom Demo PlayThrough, the same footage Gematsu split into English and Japanese posts. One page, one video. Watch it as a table of contents with mud on it, then jump to controls and say the bumper map until it is boring. Boredom is fluency. Fluency is how you survive the Kure boss without dumping both arms on the first grab.
New input notes from the floor
Siliconera’s writeup of the playthrough is the first mainstream English source to spell a guard as hold B together with LB or RB — one side covering while the other side stays a person. That sits on top of the published gospel: tap strikes, charged holds, LT+RT tackles, dual-trigger ground pounds, a free bumper when a weapon arm is clamped. If B-plus-bumper is how the demo taught block, treat it as the current overlay until a pause-menu shot overrules it. The cheatsheet still prints the four limbs. This page is the Gamescom errata.
Vandal’s Spanish recap adds the same physical list: block, parry, dodge, grab, keep hitting when one arm is pinned. None of that is a Heat gauge. Yokoyama already warned the system will not please everyone. The comment section under the playthrough is already splitting into “finally, a heavy brawler” and “this is slow.” That split is the preview. It will not be patched by a vinyl.
The booth was a jazz bar on purpose
IGN’s sponsored walkthrough of Hall 7 is useful only as set dressing: the world’s first public demo, a jazz-bar skin, photo-op stage, Sakamoto signing. Official English socials posted the playthrough for people who could not fly to Cologne. That is the whole public offering. It is not free roam. It is not Atami. It is not Shinjuku. Sakamoto told Inven Global the combat slice is the tip of the iceberg and that exploration volume is the largest RGG has ever produced. Hold both: the tape is combat, the thesis is cities.
PAX West, September 4–7, booth 609, offered another playable combat window and a tote while supplies lasted. Tokyo Game Show 2026 is the next big public build, with an updated combat demo plus theater and stages — details on the TGS page. None of those booths replace a review copy. They replace YouTube guesswork with a twelve-minute primary source.
How to use this page in January
If the Kure boss makes your shoulders tense, do not preorder Deluxe to negotiate with your personality. Game Pass still exists on January 15, 2027. If the Kokura street minute makes you want to listen to shop signs, you are the exploration player Sakamoto was talking to — read exploration next. If you only care whether weapons are cosmetic, they are not; the tape puts steel in a hand and leaves the other bumper alive. Argue with that, not with a six-second meme.
This URL will grow a “what the floor got wrong” paragraph after TGS and after launch. Until then it is a viewing guide for one official video. Sister pages: SGF hands-on for earlier bruises, Kure for the boss’s city, combat overview for the system the booth was built to sell.
