Stranger Than Heaven Wiki

Stranger Than Heaven is RGG Studio’s fifty-year action-adventure about Makoto Daito, a Japanese-American stowaway who fights, sings, and builds a home across five Japanese cities from 1915 to 1965. This wiki gathers the facts players are actually searching for before launch: how the new combat works, which edition is worth the money, what the five maps contain, and how the showman systems sit beside the street fights. Use the modules below as a map of the whole site — every page is one click away, written for people who want answers rather than recap padding.

Launch

Release date, Game Pass, and where it actually ships

SEGA locked the worldwide date at Summer Game Fest 2026: Stranger Than Heaven launches January 15, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Xbox players get day-one Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere, so one Microsoft Store purchase covers console and PC. Steam and PlayStation Store copies stay on their own stores. PC listings currently flag Denuvo Anti-tamper, and Steam still prints system requirements as TBD — we track that on the platforms page.

If you are deciding between waiting and buying now, the preorder advice page weighs Game Pass against the Deluxe extras and the Dosu: Kagekiri blade. Physical collectors should also read the Collector’s Edition breakdown before a SteelBook sells out at a local shop.

Systems

A combat system that splits the body in two

This is not Like a Dragon’s turn-based RPG layer and it is not a simple Heat-style brawler either. In Stranger Than Heaven combat, RB and RT drive Makoto’s right arm and leg while LB and LT drive the left. You can charge a haymaker, block a grab on one side, and keep punching with the free hand. LT plus RT is a tackle; both triggers on a downed enemy start a ground-and-pound. Hands-on previews called it slower and more readable than classic Yakuza fighting, closer to a timing puzzle than a combo string.

Start with the combat basics guide if you have never mapped four limbs to four buttons, then keep the combat cheatsheet open while you watch the trailers. Weapon users should jump to the weapons page — knives, hammers, and katanas are not cosmetics here, and the preorder Dosu: Kagekiri sits in that same roster.

World

Five eras, five cities, one fifty-year map

The campaign is a chain of districts, not one forever-open sandbox. Kokura in 1915 is a smoke-stained foundry town of gambling dens. Kure in 1929 is a naval arsenal under yakuza families, where Makoto earns the Red Oni name inside the Iwaki Family. Minami, Osaka in 1943 is wartime show business with Italian mafia pressure in the wings. Atami in 1951 is a seaside tourist boom, and Shinjuku in 1965 is the pleasure district that will one day feel like Kamurocho.

The cities hub and the era timeline tool exist so you can jump era by era without spoiling the 1965 “tremendous secret” Yokoyama teased. Locations are inspired by real streets but deliberately not museum replicas — RGG has said it prefers a convincing lie over a history textbook.

Showman

How music, scouting, and stagecraft actually work

Combat keeps you alive. Show business is how Makoto climbs. While you walk a street you can “save” environmental audio — a broom, a train, even a grunt from a fight — into a sound library. Composers later turn those clips into original tracks. Then you scout singers, place a band, pick a setlist, and dress the lights. That loop is the subject of the how to run shows guide.

Deluxe buyers should know the upgrade is not just an outfit: it adds four skilled performers, three stage-production items, a promotional poster, a record player for in-game soundtracks, and an electronic camera. Compare those extras in the edition comparison tool before you spend the extra twenty dollars.

People

Makoto Daito and a cast that mixes Tokyo and Hollywood

Makoto Daito is portrayed by Yu Shirota, himself mixed-race, which Yokoyama called a perfect fit for a man who is never fully claimed by either country. His rival-friend Yu Shinjo is Dean Fujioka. Orpheus, the smuggler who catches the stowaway, is Snoop Dogg. Suzy Day is Tori Kelly. Takashi is Satoshi Fujihara of Official Hige Dandism. Keiko Shirai is Ado, with an original look that does not unmask the singer. Late actor Bunta Sugawara’s likeness is Genzo Iwaki; Tupac Shakur’s likeness is Amaru, added after Snoop introduced the studio to the estate, with no generative-AI voices.

The full table lives on the cast page. Story context — including why this is a Tojo origin without a young Kiryu — sits in the story hub and the Tojo Clan explainer.

Buy

Standard, Deluxe, Collector’s, and the Kagekiri blade

Street price in the US is $69.99 Standard, $89.99 Deluxe, and $129.99 Collector’s. Deluxe is a digital bundle: original Makoto outfit, four weapons, four performers, three stage items, poster, record player, electronic camera. Collector’s adds a SteelBook, 12-inch vinyl of the theme, art box, Deluxe code, and the Dosu: Kagekiri preorder weapon. Amazon physical Standard copies have also been advertised with a poster.

Use the editions hub for the shopping list and the side-by-side tool if you want a single screen. Game Pass owners still need to decide whether Deluxe extras are worth a separate upgrade after launch — SEGA has said a Deluxe Upgrade DLC will exist for Standard buyers.

Guides

Practical guides built from the actual trailers

Because the game is still unreleased, every guide here is tied to footage you can watch on the page — official combat overviews, SEGA trailers, and hands-on demos — not invented walkthrough steps. The guides hub is the index. How to play is the on-ramp. Combat basics slows the bumper scheme down. How to run shows is the showman loop. How to survive is crowd-fight hygiene from the Kokura and Osaka demos.

If you only want a verdict on tone and difficulty, the preview review and hands-on impressions collect what IGN, Shacknews, and the SEGA combat stream actually showed, including the “Yakuza, like a Souls game” line from the Summer Game Fest floor.

Tools

Three tools that answer the shopping and input questions

Not every question needs a 2,000-word essay. The edition compare tool is a filterable table of Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s. The era timeline is a fifty-year strip of cities, characters, and tone. The combat cheatsheet is the bumper map you can screenshot. They live together on the tools desk.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Stranger Than Heaven a Yakuza / Like a Dragon game?

It is a standalone prequel in the same universe, covering the founding of the Tojo Clan. Yokoyama has said it will not restage younger versions of the modern series leads, and you do not need to have played Like a Dragon to follow Makoto.

When does Stranger Than Heaven come out?

January 15, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Xbox on PC). Xbox Game Pass has day-one access. Some Steam storefronts may display January 14 depending on time zone.

Do I need to preorder to enjoy the combat?

No. The dual-limb system is in every edition. Preordering Standard, Deluxe, or Collector’s currently adds the Dosu: Kagekiri weapon. Game Pass players can skip the box entirely and still play on day one.

What languages does the game support?

Official subtitles include Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Russian, Polish, Latin American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Voice is a single mixed-language track that changes with the scene rather than separate full dubs.

Where should a new player start on this wiki?

Read How to Play, then Combat Controls, then the Cities hub. If you are buying, open the edition compare tool last so the extras sit against a price you already understand.
